What "Sustainable" Means

In everyday language, something is sustainable if it can continue over time. Development is not sustainable when short-term growth destroys the resources, health, or trust on which the future depends. A production model may be profitable today, but if it depletes water supplies, contaminates land, or creates unacceptable risks for workers, it cannot remain stable in the long term.

The widely used definition developed by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development describes development that meets present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs. It emphasises both essential human needs and the limits created by technology, institutions, and natural systems.

Three Dimensions That Cannot Be Separated

The environmental dimension includes climate, biodiversity, water, soil, air quality, and resource use. The social dimension includes health, education, safety, human rights, equality, and public participation. The economic dimension includes jobs, innovation, productivity, financial resilience, and the capacity to meet society's needs.

These dimensions are interdependent. Economies require energy, materials, workers, and stable institutions. Social well-being depends on jobs, housing, health care, and a safe environment. Ecosystems are affected by how society produces, consumes, and manages land. A solution that improves one indicator while seriously undermining other essential conditions is not genuinely sustainable.

Needs, Limits, and Fairness

Sustainable development does not require every person or community to reduce consumption in the same way. Some communities urgently need access to safe water, energy, housing, and employment. Others need to reduce excessive resource use and the impacts of high consumption. Fairness means recognising different starting conditions and responsibilities.

It is also important to distinguish renewable and non-renewable resources. A forest can regenerate if harvesting remains within recovery rates and ecosystem functions are protected. Fossil fuels do not renew on a human timescale. Even a renewable resource can be used unsustainably when consumption is faster than regeneration or when associated ecological processes are damaged.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, all UN Member States adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its core includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets covering poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, water, energy, decent work, innovation, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate, oceans, terrestrial ecosystems, peace, institutions, and partnerships.

The Goals are interconnected rather than independent. Energy-efficient housing can reduce emissions, household costs, and health risks at the same time. Yet a poorly designed "green" project may create land conflict or disadvantage local communities. Progress must therefore be assessed through relationships and trade-offs, not only through the most convenient indicator.

What Sustainable Development Looks Like in a City

For a city, sustainable development may include compact planning, reliable public transport, safe walking routes, efficient buildings, affordable housing, green spaces, and effective stormwater management. Infrastructure should be accessible to different groups and resilient to heat, floods, energy disruption, and other shocks.

Individual projects need to operate as a system. Bicycle parking will not transform mobility without safe routes. Tree planting will not reduce heat effectively if trees lack soil volume and water. Waste sorting will not deliver results without collection, processing capacity, and markets for recovered materials.

What It Means for Business

For business, sustainability begins with understanding impacts, dependencies, and risks. A company depends on energy, water, materials, employees, suppliers, infrastructure, and customer trust. It also creates impacts through products, operations, procurement, and financial decisions.

Practical action includes identifying material issues, collecting reliable data, setting accountable targets, investing in efficiency, protecting workers, improving supply-chain transparency, and reporting honestly. Sustainability should not be reduced to marketing claims. Highlighting a small positive initiative while ignoring the main impacts creates a risk of greenwashing.

What Individuals Can Do

Personal choices matter, but they have the greatest effect when supported by infrastructure and policy. People can reduce food waste, choose durable products, repair and reuse items, save energy and water, use shared transport, and support responsible organisations.

Participation is equally important: engaging in community decisions, checking information, asking for transparency, and supporting systemic solutions. Sustainable development does not place all responsibility on consumers — it distributes responsibility among governments, business, finance, science, and citizens.

Measuring Progress

Good intentions are not a substitute for measurement. Effective plans need a baseline, a specific target, a deadline, an accountable owner, and indicators of results. Instead of promising to "be greener," an organisation should define which emissions, water use, or waste streams will be reduced, by when, and through which actions.

At the same time, no single metric captures the whole picture. Emissions may fall while water use or social risk increases. A connected set of indicators, regular data updates, and willingness to adjust the plan are necessary when unintended consequences appear.
